“Harnessing entrepreneurship opportunity in spices in Northern India”

CONCEPT NOTE:

The country is witnessing spicy year 2020 due to export surplus in immunity boosting spices. Wherein the country has achieved a remarkable breakthrough in export of spices during the Covid-19 pandemic. Notably, the export of spices from India rose by 159a to Rs 10,001.61 crore during April to August this year, up from V8, BSB.06 crore in the corresponding period last year. Boosting the exportable quantity of spices, the country recorded the highest export at 5.'7 lakh tonnes compared to 4.94 lakh tonnes in the same period 2019. Not only Chilli and cumin spurred export growth, small cardamom, ginger, turmeric, fenugreek, nutmeg, mace, coriander and other seed spices such as aniseed, and dill seed, among others, grew substantially contributing to the spices export basket from India.

Concurrently the domestic consumption of spices is also on rise. The domestic as well as export market offer a tremendous opportunity for farmers, aggregators, processors, value addition and other stakeholders in the supply chain of spices in India. Spices oils and oleoresins along with specialty spices from India augur well with make in India for the world.

In this context, Spices Board of India, Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Department of Biotechnology and South Asia Biotechnology Centre is jointly organizing a Spices Webinar entitled “Harnessing entrepreneurship opportunity in spices In India” on Friday, 27th November 2020. The webinar is meant to share insights and expertise on the potential of business opportunities in the spices sector in India. as well as to provide the up-to-date information about the emerging opportunity for entrepreneurs, programs and schemes, investment and financing and registration processes to spur growth of the spices sector in India.

SUMMARY REPORT:

The Khadi & Village Industries Corporation (KVIC), the Spices Board of India, the Department of Biotechnology and the DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub for Western Dry Region have organized a national level spices webinar “Harnessing entrepreneurship opportunity in spices in India” on Friday, 27th November, 2020. The webinar was meant to engage the rural gramodhyog of KVIC and share insights and expertise on the potential of business opportunities in spices sector in India.

Notably, the export of spices from India rose by 15% to Rs 10,001.61 crore during April to August this year, up from ₹8,858.06 crore in the corresponding period last year. Boosting the exportable quantity of spices, the country recorded highest export at 5.7 lakh tonnes compared to 4.9 lakh tonnes in the same period 2019. Not only chilli and cumin spurred export growth, small cardamon, ginger, turmeric, fenugreek, nutmeg, mace, coriander and other seed spices such as aniseed, and dill seed, among others, grew substantially contributing to the spices export basket from India.

The national level spices webinar has engage 100s of entrepreneurs , start ups and progressive farmers from rural areas and professionals of DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan hub, KVIC, ICAR-NRCSS, ICAR-IISR, FSSAI and the Federation of Spices Stakeholders (FISS) to provide the up-to-date information about the emerging opportunity for entrepreneurs, programs and schemes, investment and financing and registration processes to spur growth of spices sector in India. The KVIC Chairman Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena called on the entrepreneurs to seize the unexplored potential of immunity boosting spices & make India atmanirbhar, emphasized during the National level spices webinar “Harnessing entrepreneurship opportunity in spices in India”.

KVIC, ICAR-NRCSS, ICAR-IISR, FSSAI and the Federation of Spices Stakeholders (FISS) to provide the up-to-date information about the emerging opportunity for entrepreneurs, programs and schemes, investment and financing and registration processes to spur growth of spices sector in India. The KVIC Chairman Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena called on the entrepreneurs to seize the unexplored potential of immunity boosting spices & make India atmanirbhar, emphasized during the National level spices webinar “Harnessing entrepreneurship opportunity in spices in India”.

The Spices Board of India’s Shri P M Suresh Kumar, Director (Mktg) and Dr Shrishail KK enumerated schemes and programs on spices for entrepreneurs while Dr Gopal Lal, Director of ICAR-NRCSS and Dr E Jayashree of ICAR-IISR listed technologies and value-added products of spices developed indigenously by ICAR institutions, which can be commercialized by the entrepreneurs.

Dr CD Mayee and Dr Bhagirath Choudhary of the DBT-South Asia Biotechnology Centre Biotech Kisan Hub for Western Dry Region invited entrepreneurs and businesses to help strengthen quality production of spices, improve IPM based production and establish linkages between producers, processors and consumers as part of DBT’s Biotech Kisan Hub for Western Dry region. FSSAI’s Dr. Vijay Pal Singh made a comprehensive presentation on registration and certification process of spices product and familiarized participants about the improved registration system FoSCoS.

On behalf of the DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan hub, Ms. Sarita, Principle of Multi-Disciplinary Training Centre (MTDC) of KVIC coordinated the webinar and emphasize on creating self-reliance amongst the poor and building up a strong rural community spirit and providing employment and self-employment creation.

Dr Govind Gujar of the South Asia Biotechnology Centre offered the concluding remarks and vote of thanks to co-organizers and all the participants.
