Farmer scientific dialogue program on IPM Cumin

Venue and Date: Village Undu, Sheo Telshil, Barmer on 26th February 2022

The Biotech Kisan Hub, Spices Board of India, South Asia Biotechnology Centre, and Janata Seva Sansthan jointly organized Regional seminar On 26 February 2022 as part of 35th anniversary celebration of Spice Board of India. On this occasion, Hon'ble Minister of Industry and Commerce Sh. Piyush Goyal Ji interacted with Sh Bhagirath Choudhary of South Asia Biotechnology Centre in the presence of 300 small and marginal farmers from village Undu, Shiv Tehsil of Barmer district. SABC’s Bhagirath Choudhary shared the successful collaboration between Biotech Kisan Hub and Spices Board of India and the success story of IPM cumin in Western Rajasthan.

Farmers Field Training Program & Kisan Mela: Tarpaulin Distribution program

Venue and Date: Village Dheengsara, Nagaur district on 27th February 2022.

The Biotech Kisan Hub for Western Dry Region of the Department of Biotechnology and the Spices Board of India organized Farmers’ Mela cum Tarpauline distribution program on 27th February 2022 at Farmer Punaram ji farm in village Dhingsara, Nagaur. Hundreds of farmers attended farmers’ fair and 60 enrolled farmers received tarpauline free of cost supported by Biotech Kisan hub and the Spices Board of India. The main prupose of the tarpauline distribution program was to improve quality, hygiene, and food safety of cumin and strengthen value chain in Western Rajasthan.

Kurki Quality Improvement Training Program on Seed Spices

Venue and Date: Village Kurki, Rabariyawas, Pali on 2nd February 2022

In the Kurki cluster of IPM cumin demonstration plot under the Department of Biotechnology, India Biotech Kisan Hub, the Spices Board India in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, India; South Asia Biotechnology Centre, RSAMB, and Ambuja Cement Foundation organized on-field training program “Kurki Quality Improvement Training Program on Seed Spices” held at village Kurki, Rabariyawas, Pali district on 2nd February 2022. The program was attended by smallholder farmers, Mahila Kisan, Department officials and FPO of Kurki village.

KISAN MELA-IPM Cumin Production

Venue and Date: Village-Budi Arjunpura, district Nagaur on 11th February 2022,

As part of the Biotech Kisan Hub, the Department of Biotechnology of Govt of India in collaboration with South Asia Biotechnology Centre, Jodhpur, Spices Board India, ICAR- National Research Centre on Seed Spices, Ajmer and Department of Agriculture Nagaur held a mega Farmers’ Fair on 11th February 2022, Organized at village Budhi Arjunpura, Nagaur. Farmers were trained to adopt scientific methods of cumin farming in the Nagaur district. The program witnessed an increasing craze for residue-free cumin production among farmers in Nagaur district. Farmers were also appreciated of the IPM demonstration plot and excited to visit line sown cumin demonstration plot for the first time in Nagaur district.

Farmers Visit to Biotech Kisan Hub Facility

Smallholder growers from village Kurki, Jaitaran tehsil, Pali, and scientists from the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Jodhpur visited the Biotech Kisan Hub facility, interacted with scientists of South Asia Biotechnology Centre, and toured the research area of the tinkering laboratory.

Kurki cluster is an emerging IPM cumin belt of Biotech Kisan Hub supported by the Department of Biotechnology, India developed with 2 years of efforts, field demonstrations, farmers' mela, and continued engagement with smallholders, in collaboration with ICAR-National Research Centre on Seed Spices & Ambuja Cement Foundation.

Field day-cum-Farmers-Scientist Interaction on Paan Methi

The Biotech Kisan hub project proved to be a boon for Nagauri paan methi (Kasuri methi) farmers. The Biotech Kisan Hub project of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India in collaboration with the National Research Centre on Seed Spices, Ajmer, Ambuja Cement Foundation and South Asia Biotechnology Centre, Jodhpur organized field day on Nagori Paan methi on 21 January 2022 at village Marwar Mundwa. The chief guest was Bhagirath Choudhary, Director of South Asia Biotechnology Center, Jodhpur and the special guest was Dr. SS Meena, Dr Murlidhar Meena and Dr Shiv Lal of ICAR-NRCSS, and Team Leader of Ambuja Cement Foundation, Mr. Prashant Ranga, Government officials and hundreds of smallholder farmers growing Nagauri paan methi in Mundwa tehsil of Nagaur district, Rajasthan. Biotech Kisan hub partners ICAR-NRCSS and SABC distributed tarpauline to enrolled farmers, interacted with farmers and visited demonstration field of Nagauri Paan Methi.

Kisan Diwas cum Training Program Focusing on Seed Spices

A mega National Farmers’ Day 2021, Kisan Diwas cum training program focusing on seed spices was celebrated on 23 December 2021 at Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir at village Kurki, Tehsil Jaitaran, district Pali as part of the Biotech Kisan Hub for Western Dry Region implemented in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India; ICAR-National Research Centre on Seed Spices, Ajmer; Ambuja Cement Foundation and South Asia Biotechnology Centre, Jodhpur.

On-Field Interaction with Cumin Growing Farmers

DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub in collaboration with ICAR-NRCSS and Ambuja Cement Foundation has organized the farmers’ field day titled “On-field interaction with cumin growing farmers of Jaitaran Tehsil of Pali District of Rajasthan” at the cumin demonstration farmer’s field on Wednesday, 6th January 2021 at village Kurki, tehsil Jaitaran, District Pali, Rajasthan. The farmer's field day was meant to share the GAP and IPM based package of practices (POP) prepared and implemented through the demonstration on farmers’ field. DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan hub has been implementingcumin demonstrations in Jaitaran tehsil of Pali district of Western Rajasthan.

DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub in collaboration with ICAR-NRCSS and Ambuja Cement Foundation has organized the “On-field training of Nagauri Pan Methi growing farmers of Mandawa Tehsil of Nagaur District of Rajasthan” on 8th January 2021, at village Soliyana, Mundawa district, with the participation of hundreds of farmers growing Nagauri Paan Methi in Mundawa - an epicenter of Nagauri paan methi growing areas of Nagaur district of Rajasthan. The farmers' field day was meant to share the GAP and IPM based package of practices (POP) prepared and implemented through the demonstration on farmers’ fields. DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan hub has been implementing Nagauri paan methi demonstrations in Mundawa tehsil of Nagaur district of Western Rajasthan.

As part of DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan hub, the ICAR-National Research Centre on Seed Spices (NRCSS), Ajmer and South Asia Biotechnology Centre (SABC), Jodhpur in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Nagaur, and the Spices Board of India held a day-long field day cum training program “On-Farm Promotion of GAP and IPM in Cumin” was held at village Katyasani, Teh-Merta, District Nagaur of Rajasthan on 29 January 2021.

Kisan Mela – IPM Cumin Production

Access to science & technology is key to augmenting IPM cumin & IPM isabgol production. Emphasizing the importance of blending traditional knowledge and modern techniques to augment organic and IPM cumin production, the DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub, Jodhpur in collaboration with the ICAR-National Research Centre on Seed Spices (NRCSS), Ajmer, the Spices Board of India & Department of Agriculture, Nagaur held a day-long program “Kisan Mela – IPM Cumin Production” at village Budi Arjunpura, District Nagaur of Rajasthan on 12 February 2021.

Farmers-Industry Interaction: ITC & Shri Balaji FPO collaborate to transform income of “IPM cumin” growing smallholder farmers of Pali District, Rajasthan

Facilitated by the Department of Biotechnology DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub for Western Dry Region, FPO Shri Balaji Farmers Producers Company Limited, Village Balada, Tehsil- Jaitaran, District Pali, Rajasthan, and ITC Ltd, Barmer, Rajasthan agreed to work together for procurement, aggregation and buy-back of quality IPM and organic cumin from smallholder farmers of Jaitran tehsil of Pali district of Rajasthan. The expression of interest was signed between Shri Balaji FPO and ITC on 1st March 2021 during the farmers mela attended by hundreds of smallholder farmers on the cumin demonstration farmer’s field organized jointly by DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan hub and Ambuja Cement Foundation at village Kurki, Tehsil Jaitran, District Pali of Rajasthan.

Farmers Field Training on IPM Based Cumin Production System

Venue and Date: Padri Charnan, Dist. Jalore-Sanchore, Rajasthan on 3rd Nov 2020.

DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub for Western dry region and the Spices Board of India have organized an intensive training program “IPM based cumin production system” at Sanchore’s Padri Charnan on 03 Nov 2020. Around 150 farmers in cumin growing areas of Siwara tehsil gathered to learn about the IPM based package of practices, use of biologicals & sticky traps to control insect pests such as aphids & thrips. FPO based aggregators and M/s Rapid Organics Pvt Ltd, a major exporter from Sanchore were invited to ensure buy-back at remunerative prices to farmer growing IPM based cumin in Sanchore region of Western Rajasthan.

Farmers Field Training on “IPM Cumin”

Venue and Date: Asadi, Sindhiyan, Dist. Barmer on 31st October 2020

Barmer region is emerging as a production centre for “IPM cumin”, fetches 15-20% additional benefits to “IPM cumin” growing farmers. DBT-SABC Biotech KISAN hub for western dry region started Rabi 2020 mega farm demonstrations cum training program for smallholder seed spices farmers of Barmer Girab, Barmer. DBT-SABC Biotech Kisan Hub for the Western dry region and the Spices Board of India have organized an intensive training program “On-farm training program of cumin growing farmers” at Barmer’s most backward village Asadi Sindhiyan on 31 Oct 2020. Around 100 farmers in cumin growing areas of Girab-Asadi-Jhinjhinyali, nearing the India-Pakistan border area were trained to adopt IPM based package of practices, use of biologicals & sticky traps to control insect pests such as aphids & thrips.
